Writing everyday is the key to improvement and development in writing. That is why keeping a writer's journal or diary is vital.
A writer's journal is used to keep your idea, thoughts, plans, notes and yes even drawings. Some people are more visual than others. The diary can be of any format, but it should be exclusively for writing.
Exclusivity is an important consideration when keeping a writer's diary because if you start to write your grocery list in it, and dental appointments, peoples telephone numbers etc. You will lose the train of thought that emerges from daily, consistent writing.
Consider the format, do you want to use an unlined hardcover book, lined notebook, a three-ringed binder with looseleaf? Or do you want to make a special folder on your computer desktop where you will place text files, graphics, etc.
Whatever you decide to use, you should be comfortable with the format and most importantly keep tract of where you intend to keep it.
Storing your writer's diary or journal in one central location is very important because as we all know things get misplaced. Unlike a misplaced grocery list where you just start a new one, a misplaced writer's diary could cause serious problems.
In summary, you should choose a format you are comfortable with, store it in a safe location and you should use it exclusively for writing. Then you will be ready to draw insight, ideas and content from it when you need to.
