Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl
by Evelyn Horan
Book review: by Angie Rose

It's always a thrill to find a book that teaches, inspires and entertains all at the same time; Jeannie A Texas Frontier Girl is just such a book

It's always a thrill to find a book that teaches, inspires and entertains all at the same time. Jeannie A Texas Frontier Girl is just such a book. This is Book One in what is a four book series by Evelyn Horan. Reading this book transports you back in time to an 1880's Frontier Texas setting through the inquisitive eyes of a sweet yet spunky Jeannie. In fact, it's a joy to 'travel back in time' with her characters!

It teaches the heart of the land, that strong, courageous pioneer spirit that helped shape America. Jeannie and her friend Helga run through a series of adventures that anchor their friendship with loyalty, courage, truthfulness and kindness.

This book will inspire you. You will love Diamond, Jeannie's horse and her dog Blue as Evelyn Horan cleverly weaves these two animal characters into their own hopeful tales reminiscent of the beloved "Charlotte's Web".

At times Jeannie and her friend Helga seem to walk right past your very eyes through Evelyn Horan's use of vivid and visually descriptive narration. A series of varied adventures challenge Jeannie and her family ranging from tornados to rattlesnakes. Each chapter is fitly tied together with what I would deem believable character growth. Jeannie grows in maturity and in her personal faith in God which Evelyn Horan has so naturally seamed into the story. Faith in God was central to survival for many pioneers; those of you who value the foundational traditions of America will love the truthful recounting of small church and schoolhouse lore.

One of my favorite lines is when Jeannie turns to Helga and says, "And one good thing, I know the good Lord is always watching over us. He's helped me out of many a scrape through the years."-1

I recommend this book for all ages. Parents will find it a pleasure to read to their younger children as its' chapters are often one complete mini adventure making it a wonderful bedtime storybook. Children will love this book and find in its' covers a picture of love of God, Country, family framed in a loyal and gentle heart that is Jeannie's. Teenagers will love this book as they will find many of their concerns addressed. Jeannie's parents are presented as great role models of love and marriage. Their kindness and wisdom is refreshing in a modern children's book world which depicts parents as either foolish or irresponsible.

Thank you Evelyn Horan for raising the standard of contemporary children's books. It is encouraging to see a modern day author continue the tradition of quality American children's literature while being respectful of America's foundational Christian heritage. I look forward to Book Two and know our readers will as well.
